Hot vs. Cold Coffee: Which One Should You Have?
There are two kinds of people in this world: those that prefer hot coffee and those that like cold coffee. Generally, based on Starbucks sales, it looks like the majority of the American population these days likes iced beverages.
On the very surface, both are coffee; typically, they’re even made from the same coffee beans, yet, they taste drastically different. But the question is, is one really better than the other?
Well, for the most part, it comes down to personal tastes, but each type also has distinct health benefits, so you need to consider that too.
Before you take your pick, here’s everything you need to know about both.
Hot Coffee — The Essentials to Know
From espresso machines to drip pots, pour-overs, and French presses, there are a lot of different ways to make hot coffee. It’s the way coffee has been drunk for centuries now—cold coffees are recent innovations.
Generally, hot coffee takes very little time to prepare; it’s packed with antioxidants and has a fair amount of caffeine that can give you the energy boost you need to get through the day. Also, those who like hot coffee find that it has stronger flavors, and the warmth helps to reduce stress and lethargy.
The only drawbacks of hot coffee are that it has higher acidity and is comparatively more bitter than cold coffee. Also, if you don’t drink it piping hot, it won’t necessarily taste as good.
Why Is Cold Coffee So Popular?
Cold coffee is prepared pretty much the same way as hot coffee—unless you’re having a cold brew, which is completely different. To make it cold, ice is added to it after the brewing and after it’s cooled down a little.
The great thing about cold coffee is that you can make it using either cold brew or hot brew, and you can prepare it in large quantities. Also, if it’s cold-brewed, it’s likely to have a higher concentration of caffeine, but it’s way less acidic and bitter!
It’s the perfect caffeine fix for hotter summer days.
Which One Should You Go For
For us, it’s always a tough call since we love both hot and cold coffee, and usually, it just comes down to our mood at that moment.
What really matters is that you use good quality and fresh espresso coffee beans to prepare your hot or cold coffee. Generally, caffeine levels aren’t that different either, so if you’re trying to cut back on caffeine, then it’s just best to use decaf coffee beans for your hot or cold brew.
